CLR Connector National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: New Statutory Holiday
The government of Canada recently passed legislation to make September 30th a federal statutory holiday called the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day provides an opportunity for employees to recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools. This may present itself as a day of quiet reflection or participation in a community event.
Most of our current collective agreements include provisions that automatically incorporates an additional Statutory Holiday if one is proclaimed by the Federal or Provincial Government. As a result, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will become a Statutory Holiday starting September 2021.
As CLR has earlier communicated in our direct message to the Members, under most of our collective agreements employees will be entitled to double time if they work on September 30th, starting this year. CLR will be meeting with the Bargaining Council to discuss the implantation of the language negotiated into the Industry Agreements that provides for one of the non-statutory holidays in the agreement to be floated if a new holiday is proclaimed.
