Trust, accountability, and a commitment to safety are what set worksites apart. The BC Construction Industry Drug & Alcohol Program (BC D&A Program) is leading the way by creating safer job sites across the province.

At the 2025 NCLRA Conference, CLR’s James Buchan, Director of Health & Safety, will speak on a panel alongside Dan Demers, Director of Business Development at CannAmm, moderated by Miro Maras, Vice President of the Millwright Regional Council. Together, they will cover:

• How the BC D&A Program differs from models used in other provinces

• The union’s active role in coordinating testing and receiving outcomes

• How worker information is managed with strict safeguards for confidentiality

• The built-in aftercare and support triggered automatically after a policy violation

• How the program contributes to a culture of safety, trust, and professionalism across job sites

• The importance of clearly communicated safety expectations in attracting and retaining new entrants to the trades

This session offers a rare inside look at how joint industry–labour leadership is reshaping the future of construction in BC. The conference also features Keynote Speaker Craig MacTavish, former pro hockey player, coach, and general manager, bringing leadership insights from the world of professional sports.
